It is believed to one of the oldest competitive sports appearing in early Egyptian wall paintings and this was just the start of the wrestling story.
The ancient games of Olympiad began in BC776 and in the early days wrestling featured as one of the main events.
There was a gap of 1500 years before the resumption of the Olympic Games in 1896 and once again wrestling scoops a very similar role to that which it took many years before. With the popularity of the sport growing throughout the world, Greco-Roman wrestling was incorporated into the games, this being considered to be a direct follow on from the early Greek and Roman wrestlers.
Greco-Roman wrestling restricted competitors to only using their arms and upper bodies both for attacking and holding. Professional wrestling continued to develop and across the US and Britain and there was a major movement towards a style known as "catch as catch can". This was a much more open style of the sport and much more entertaining.
Further progression in the early 1900's saw the introduction of "freestyle" which allowed contact between the wrestlers both above and below the waist. This gave the contestants the ability to trip, push and lift the opposition using their legs.
Sport and fitness are always areas of great interest to people and maybe those are just a couple of the reasons why wrestling has maintained its level of interest.
Wrestlers will use innovative weight training techniques, covering rapid fat loss, muscle building, and unique new exercises to maintain their peak performance.
To this day wrestling scoops popularity across the world.
